A not-so-happy birthday to the Savannahs sold as A...

hris Shirk posted that his Savannah kittens turned one year old yesterday (September 3rd). These kittens are are stuck in a legal custody dispute over in the Netherlands after being illegally imported into the country as Ashera cats (not disclosing their actual heritage). It's horribly sad that these cats have been the ones to really suffer here. No lovely pet home for these guys, being held in a facility while the authorities decide what to do.I hope there is a resolution soon, and that these cats can be placed in good homes at some stage not too far into the future!

Hey, Petlovers

Hey, Petlovers!
Petlovers need pet portraits.

Hey, Petlovers! is a small business dedicated to honoring and celebrating pets through unique watercolor portraits. Your pet is your best, most loyal friend, so be a friend and hang his or her portrait in your living room or office, on your refrigerator, dashboard, locker door, or wherever you think seeing your little guy's face will brighten people's lives a little.

These original works of art are just $90 for an 8x10 inch or $50 for a 5x7 inch. Add $10 per head for additional friends in a painting. Custom sizes are available, just email me for a quote. All paintings are done on heavyweight acid-free watercolor paper.

All that is needed to get your pet portrait started today is a good quality photo of your dog, cat, bird, pet rattlesnake, etc. You can email it or send it in the mail. I also love to hear a little about the pet. Does your kitten have a mean streak? Is your pooch a real clown? Let me know. Once I've received your photo, I'll start your painting immediately. As long as you are satisfied, you can send me payment through the mail or paypal. It's as easy as loving your pet!

Custom paintings are a great gift, either for your fellow petlovers, or your petloving self. Every pet deserves a portrait! Every petlover deserves a gift!

We are open every day except major holidays, and our hours are 8-11 am & 1-4 pm by appointment only. If you are interested in visiting, please call us at (559) 638-8696. At this time, we are at our financial limit on how many cats and kittens we can care for. To be able to take in any more, we charge a surrender fee. If the cat is already altered and vaccinations are up to date, it's just $30 per month per cat for as long as the cat is here or up to a maximum of $2,000 per cat. In 14 years we have rescued over 400 cats a year from the Fresno S.P.C.A. and currently have well over 700 cats. The Cat House on the Kings is not just a rescue. We are also a lifetime sanctuary and adoption center. We try to find the best possible homes for the cats and kittens that reside here and we never kill the cats we take in. They stay here until they are adopted or die of old age........however long that takes.

Pet Lovers and Enthusiasts Find Each Other for Dating and Friendship Via Web-Based Venue
BALTIMORE, Md., Sept. 17, 2004 -- PetLovers Connection announces its unique online service (http://www.petlovers-one.blogspot.com/) designed to help pet lovers and enthusiasts meet each other for dating, romance, friendship, camaraderie, or networking. Since its inception, the PetLovers Connection website has garnered subscribership on a national and international scale.
"We are the one-stop hub of interaction for individuals who are devoted to their pets and looking to connect with people who equally love their pets or who have similar interests locally and around the world," Janet Oquendo of PetLovers Connection stated.
By registering at PetLoversConnection.com, pet lovers have the opportunity to create a personal profile describing themselves for the site database. The database also includes information about the type and number of pets each registered user has.
Registered users can take this a step further by subscribing to the site. Subscribers are able to contact other subscribers directly through the website, enabling them to explore dating, share information about their favorite pets, build friendships, or even interview potential pet-sitters.
"We designed the site foremostly to be easy to use and enable pet lovers to connect with each other almost effortlessly," said Oquendo. "The secondary benefit has been the growth of a community of pet lovers who serve as resources to one another. PetLovers Connection nurtures a sense of community among people with a common bond - a devotion to pets of all kinds."
An important feature of PetLovers Connection is that it breaks down the stereotypes and labels that sometimes arise in situations where everyone may not have comparable levels of dedication to pets. Oquendo commented, "People who consider pets integral members of their families feel right at home at PetLoversConnection.com. People who devote most of their spare time rescuing animals also find common ground in the PetLovers community."
In addition, PetLovers Connection provides a venue where people with unusual pet interests can meet their match. Individuals who love tarantulas, iguanas, or exotic birds are in good company with horse aficianados and Rottweiler enthusiasts.
"There are no 'crazy cat lady' labels in the PetLovers Connection community," added Oquendo. "In this community, devotion to animals is an asset - not a source of ridicule or misunderstanding. People who might have a hard time meeting other people because of misconceptions about pet lovers can come to PetLovers Connection for a sense of understanding and mutual respect."
Features that are on the horizon at PetLoversConnection.com include a library of articles on topics such as pet care and dating for pet lovers, as well as a page containing links to animal rescue organizations and pet-related clubs.

User Reviews for Petlovers Animal Hospital

User Reviews for Petlovers Animal Hospital
They are truly Pet LOVERS

10/23/2007 Posted by wiffi
The pros at Petlovers Animal Hospital have proven to our family, time and again, the meaning of care and dedication. Both of our rescued dogs were under their care for over 10 years. During that time, all treatment was top-notch, by both Dr. Bethaney Fryer and her excellent staff. From physical care to grooming and boarding, we have only had the most positive experiences with them. In fact, when our rescued ChowChow needed serious surgery when we first adopted her, the Petlovers staff started a campaign to aid us in raising the necessary funds. We nearly covered the cost of the preocedure, thanks to their efforts. When our beloved pets passed on to 'doggie heaven,' all the staff was comforting and empathetic. Petlovers will be our pet care center always. Even though there are nearer places, we drive 20 miles just to get there, because it is so worth it.
Terrific caring, gentle, loving staff

My first contact with Dr. Fryer was a visit with my Persian, Sheba. The staff and Dr. Fryer were exceptionally kind and gentle, made sure that Sheba was comfortable and did everything possible to alleviate any stress or anxiety. It ended up that Sheba had to be referred to a specialist and was later found to have cancer, but the folks at Petlovers Hospital were wonderful through the entire ordeal, and took a huge burden off my shoulders by coordinating and scheduling the appointments, forwarding records, etc. I've had pets for many many years, and this is easily the finest vet clinic I've ever visited. My other kitties will be regulars here too.

Genetics

Blue-eyed cats with white fur have a reputation for having greater incidence of genetic deafness.
A 2007 study published in the journal Science asserts that all house cats are descended from a group of self-domesticating desert wildcats Felis silvestris lybica circa 10,000 years ago, in the Near East.[4]
The domesticated cat and its closest wild ancestor are both diploid organisms that possess 38 chromosomes,[26] in which over 200 heritable genetic defects have been identified, many homologous to human inborn errors. Specific metabolic defects have been identified underlying many of these feline diseases. There are several genes responsible for the hair color identified. The combination of them gives different phenotypes.
Features like hair length, lack of tail or presence of a very short tail (bobtail cat) are also determined by single alleles and modified by polygenes.
The Cat Genome Project, sponsored by the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the U.S. National Cancer Institute Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center in Frederick, Maryland, focuses on the development of the cat as an animal model for human hereditary disease, infectious disease, genome evolution, comparative research initiatives within the family Felidae, and forensic potential.
All felines, including the big cats, have a genetic anomaly that may prevent them from tasting sweetness, which is a likely factor for their indifference to or avoidance of fruits, berries, and other sugary foods.

Sociability

Cats can befriend other cats. Here, one cat grooms the other.
For cats, life in close proximity with humans (and other animals kept by humans) amounts to a "symbiotic social adaptation" which has developed over thousands of years. It has been suggested that, ethologically, the human keeper of a cat functions as a sort of surrogate for the cat's mother, and that adult domestic cats live their lives in a kind of extended kittenhood,[37] a form of behavioral neoteny.
Cats may express affection towards their human companions, especially if they imprint on them at a very young age and are treated with consistent affection.
Regardless of the average sociability of any given cat or of cats in general, there are still any number of cats who meet or exceed the negative feline stereotype insofar as being poorly socialized. Older cats have also been reported to sometimes develop aggressiveness towards kittens, which may include biting and scratching; this type of behavior is known as Feline Asocial Aggression

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines, is a small predatory carnivorous species of crepuscular mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin, snakes and scorpions. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years.
A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands. Individual cats have also been known to learn on their own to manipulate simple mechanisms, such as doorknobs. Cats use a variety of vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including meowing, purring, hissing, growling, squeaking, chirping, clicking, and grunting. With 69 million of them present in American homes, cats are the most or the second most popular pets in that country. Cats also may be the most popular pet in the world, with over 600 million in homes all over the world. They are also bred and shown as registered pedigree pets. This hobby is known as the "Cat Fancy".
Until recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal. However a 2007 study found that all house cats are probably descended from a group of as few as five self-domesticating African Wildcats Felis silvestris lybica circa 8000 BC, in the Near East.

animals house

The House That Spot BuiltWritten by: mr_6470@yahoo.com Most people would laugh at the idea of letting their pet dictate the floor plan or interior design of their new home, but some pet owners have done exactly that.Take Bob Walker and his wife, of San Diego , Calif. , for example. The Walkers are the proud owners of 12 cats and one dog. This is truly a situation where the cats don't live with the Walkers—the Walkers live among their cats (in what they appropriately call "The Cats' House.") Mr. Walker adapted the house to cater to the feline population by building, among other features, a 140-foot long catwalk running throughout the house.

copy cat copied

Well, sort of.
I could not resist:

These are the kittens of Copy Cat, the cat that was cloned back in 2001/2 at Texas A&M. They’re lovely. They were produced the old-fashioned way with a father who was also produced the old-fashioned way. Here’s an article about it.
Do you remember CC? To the right is one of the pictures that was going around when she was first introduced to the world, and to the left is one of her a little over a year after she was born, with Rainbow, the cat of which she is a genetic copy. No, they don’t look exactly alike. Nor do they behave alike, in fact. Their personalities are very different. Evidently their bodies are using the same DNA in different ways. Here’s an article about that. [Update: This is a good opportunity to point out that there's indeed a lot more to biology and genetics than just DNA... How does one get from the DNA to a complicated final organism? What are the mechnisms involved? That's a hugely important area called Development. Yvette in the comments brings up an aspect of this when remarking upon the origins of calico patterning in (mostly female, rarely male - because of a battle between two X-chromosomes) cat coats.]
